We Were Told We’d Regret Moving to Gleniffer Lake Full-Time (Spoiler: We Didn’t.)

by Susan Cramer

Peaceful Central Alberta lake shoreline with trees and calm water reflecting a recreational lake community lifestyle.
In 2018, when Dave and I told people we were moving to Gleniffer Lake full-time, the reactions were… mixed.

“You’re not retired.”
“What about winter?”
“Isn’t that just for weekends?”
“You’ll get bored.”

Some people genuinely thought we’d lost our minds.

And I understand why.

Leaving city life before retirement to live at a resort year-round sounds impulsive. Risky. Maybe even romanticized.

But here’s the truth no one tells you:

Full-time lake living isn’t crazy.
It’s intentional.

“But Isn’t It Just a Summer Thing?”

Summer here is exactly what you imagine.

Boating. Fishing. Golf.
Community events. Baseball tournaments. Pickleball. Barbeques.
Evenings around the fire when no one’s in a hurry to leave.

It’s social, active, and connected.

But the part that surprised us most?

Winter.

The Season People Worry About Most

Not everyone stays through winter and that’s okay.

But those who do know something special.

There’s skating, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, tobogganing, curling, and ice fishing right here at the resort with snowmobiling and pickleball just a short drive away. Cozy potlucks. Coffee meetups. Card games. Trivia nights.

At Gleniffer Lake Resort, the infrastructure makes all the difference:

  • Indoor pool and hot tub
  • Fitness centre
  • Outdoor curling
  • Restaurant and bar open most weekends
  • Year-round utilities to most properties

Unlike Carefree, where water and sewer shut off seasonally, Gleniffer supports four-season living.

That changes everything.

Winter here isn’t isolating.

It’s peaceful.

“Don’t You Miss the City?”

We thought we might.

Instead, we discovered something we didn’t realize we were missing.

Wide open skies.
Quiet mornings.
Northern Lights dancing across the lake.
Neighbors who actually check in on each other.

There’s a slower pace but not a smaller life.

The surrounding communities are full of local fundraisers, markets, microbreweries, community dinners, and fantastic little restaurants. And don’t get me started on The Legion!

It’s connected. Just in a different way.

So How Do We Make It Work?

Another fair question.

Dave brought his renovation and carpentry experience from Calgary and now offers smaller-scale services within the local resorts.

I reinvented myself as a REALTOR® and now help others make similar lifestyle moves, whether that’s lakefront living, acreage life, or a home in one of our surrounding communities.

We didn’t retire.

We redesigned.

Is Full-Time Resort Living for Everyone?

No.

And that’s exactly why it works for the people it works for.

If you need constant city stimulation, immediate access to everything, or thrive on high-speed pace, this may not be your place.

But if you crave:

  • Space
  • Community
  • Beauty
  • Simplicity
  • Balance

Then it might be closer than you think.

The Truth?

We didn’t downsize our life.

We expanded it.

If you’ve ever quietly wondered what it would feel like to live at Gleniffer Lake full-time, not just visit, you’re not alone.

And if you want honest, practical insight (not just the highlight reel), I’m always happy to share what it’s really like.

No pressure. Just clarity.
